The 2010 HOPS season is about to get underway on Thursday 4 Feb – usual venue and timeslot. And, yes, we may be playing away from home at least once this season.

HOPSters may have noticed in the current issue of Gourmet Traveller mag Moo Dark Ale, Moo Hefe, Seven Sheds Razzamatazz and Seven Sheds Willie Warmer all featured in Max Allen’s Top 25 Boutique Beers. So … will be featuring ‘em at the next HOPS plus Orchard Ale from the Mad Brewers – an off-centre ale from an off-shoot of Dr Chuck Hahn’s Malt Shovel Brewery. It’s a saison style ale made with 20 per cent apple juice and all works rather nicely.

More details shortly but mark it in your diaries:

HOPSters, all

At the next gathering we’ll see a couple of European lagers go keg-for-keg – Italy’s Peroni and Austria’s Trumer Pils. The latter is an old favourite at HOPS and one of Europe’s finest; we’ll see how Peroni shapes up off tap for the first time in Tasmania. Holgate Nut Brown Ale will follow and the fourth beer remains a mystery but all will be revealed on the night.

This pre-Tasmanian Beer Fest HOPS will be the sixth and last gathering for 2009, so don’t miss out. Several colorful brewing identities will be on hand.

Despite rumours to the contrary, our resident Wine Wanker Phil Laing hasn’t gone to meet his maker but is currently swanning around the wine swills of Italy and France.

HOPSters, one and all,

The batting order has been finalized and we can confirm that an old friend of HOPS Brad Rogers will be flying in from Byron Bay to showcase his Stone & Wood Draught Ale. Rusted-on HOPSters will recall that Brad was formerly head brewer for Matilda Bay and a serial guest until be escaped the Fosters empire and buggered off to Byron a couple of years back. Welcome back, Brad!

Batting order:

MYSTERY SPARKLING CYDER (sourced from an English cyder apple orchard in NW Tassie, more will be revealed on the night ….. )

WARSTEINER – our token Germanic lager in honour of Oktoberfest and it’s a cracker

STONE & WOOD DRAUGHT ALE – the cloudy, golden ale that’s taking Byron by storm – first-time ever in Tassie

HOLGATE HOPINATOR – super hoppy ale from Holgate Brewhouse, Woodend, Victoria – another Tassie premiere.

I’ll be shouting a foaming beaker of Seven Sheds Willie Warmer for anyone who buys the book on the day at the New Sydney Hotel from 3pm.

HOPSters, all

Due to the worldwide shortage of lemons and retired mariachi players, we have been unable to secure the keg of Corona and other beers, as per my previous email. However, the date, time and place for next HOPS gathering were correct.

As last-minute replacements we have arranged kegs of the following:

Hazards Ale (an old HOPS favourite, Tassie’s oldest craft brew)

White Rabbit (new Yarra Valley micro under watchful eye of beer svengali Phil Sexton of Matilda Bay/Little Creatures fame)

Seven Sheds Elephants Trunk (strong Belgian style ale with a whiff of Trappist monk’s habit)

Inn Cider (not a beer, as such, but first time this Tassie cider has been kegged).

LATE MAIL:  We were a bit premature with the keg of Inn Cider – not available for a few weeks.

Instead we’ve got a keg of Van Dieman Pale Ale from Tassie’s newest craft brewery, based near Evandale. Owner/brewer Will Tatchell will be on hand to tell the Van Dieman Brewing story.

Plus the usual shenanigans.

6-8pm, Upstairs, New Sydney Hotel, 87 Bathurst St, Hobart, Thursday 20 August, Cost: $25 per skull

Beerily yours,  Baron Wilhelm von Biermeister

HOPSters, all

The last gathering was our biggest yet, with several late-comers unfortunately missing out.  Yes, we have pretty much outgrown the venue.  In an effort to keep numbers to a more manageable level, I have secured the following beers for the next bash:

A keg of CORONA – and not just any old keg, the beer for this one has been carefully strained through the jockstrap of a retired mariachi player to ensure a certain funky character. FREE LEMONS handed out with this lemon.

BLANDO – brand new release from Foster’s where those clever brewers have succeeded in removing most of the flavour, carbohydrates and beer-like characters through A NEW, TECHNOLOGICAL METHOD.

TOOHEYS CLEAR – another new product where all colour and most of the flavour has been removed leaving … well – a clear, sparkling beverage that is surprisingly refreshing.

WATNEY’S RED BARREL VINTAGE 1973 – yes, this is the beer which launched the Campaign for Real Ale in the Old Dart and was so beloved by the bearded, anorak-wearing CAMRA members that they nicknamed it “Grotney’s”.

Finger food on the night will include bread or lard and cold chips.

See you there.

HOPSters all,

Due to popular demand and with the on-going support of the New Sydney pub, we will be holding SIX HOPS gatherings during 2008. Dates are: February 7, April 3, June 5, August 7, September 18, November 13. Hopefully, the increased frequency means we won’t have to turn punters away but we’re keen to limit numbers below 80 for comfort’s sake. Bar manager Big Al wants to use HOPS events to select members’ favourite beers as guest tap beers in the downstairs bar (and if they’re popular enough, they will become regulars among the New Sydney’s excellent range of tap beers). We’ll let you know what beers will be offered at the first 2008 HOPS shortly, in the mean time, mark this in your diary:

Finishing off with MB Alpha Pale Ale in a badged Matilda Bay glass which is yours to keep. Plus usual tasty finger food from super-chef Mark and usual gabfest from brewers.

Calling all HOPSters,

For our next HOP-THEMED gathering we have secured a keg of the latest James Squire Hop Thief Ale. Regulars will recall the excellent brew from last year but the latest batch features two new hop varieties which Malt Shovel senior brewer Franklin Lucarotti will be on hand to talk about and generally answer your questions. We will also have a keg of Wig & Pen Amber Ale which will be introduced by the long-serving Canberra brew-pub’s brewer Richard Watkins. Fingers crossed, as we hope to serve this beer via a Randall device filled with fresh Tasmanian-grown hop flowers  (just don’t tell the Guv’ner Gary as it requires hacking into his beer lines to attach this cunning device which delivers a burst of fresh hop flavour to every glass).

We’ll also feature two local brews – the re-born Hazard’s Ale and Cleansing Ale, a new brew which the Two-Metre Tall Guy Ashley Huntington will be along to talk up. There will also be an extra surprise or two (as always). After our brilliant end-of-season outing to Moorilla Estate/Moo Brew (during which we inducted many new HOPSters) we’re expecting a bumper crowd so … be early to avoid disappointment (you have been warned!!).

HOPS Newsletter (November 2004)

Hopsters,

I've just returned from the Big Island where I sampled 13 Moons Oyster
Stout - the one-off brew I was allowed to create last month at the new James
Squire Brewhouse at King St Wharf, Sydney. We actually dangled 13 oysters in
the brewing kettle and the stout was tasting bloody good! We are smuggling a
keg south for the next HOPS gathering, as well as some James Squire Golden
Ale (their latest limited edition brew). Malt Shovel head brewer Doug
Donelan is also travelling down for the shenanigans.

We will also be featuring Trumer Pils, an outstanding drop from Austria that
knocks many German lagers for six. Of course, we'll have be the usual
Mystery Beer and one or two other surprises.

Because of the growing popularity of HOPS we will be capping entry (80 is
the limit), so arrive early or pre-pay at the New Sydney (we're NOT taking
bookings because too many of you slackers book then don't turn up!). And we
will make sure there is plenty of tasty snacks (promise).

See ya there,

HOPS OCTOBER 2004 NEWSLETTER
Hail Hopsters,
We have created a MONSTER! 70-plus Hopsters turned up to our recent August
meeting and (yes!) we almost ran out of beer. In future, we've decided a) to
cap numbers at 80; b) to order more beer! c) to cater more finger food. You
should also book and pay in advance (at New Sydney) or arrive early on the
night to avoid disappointment. You have been warned.

It was certainly a great way to celebrate our 1st anniversary (and 5th
meeting) as the keg of Cascade Spring Fest was dispatched in record time.
Visiting Matilda Bay head brewer Brad Rogers introduced his Redback,
Dogbolter and Bohemian Pilzner, respectively. He also dished out countless
Matilda bay T-shirts to winners of our Mystery Beer game (it was Matilda Bay
Alpha Ale) and lucky door prize winners.

 I've been up on the
North Island recently brewing an Oyster Stout and we'll have a keg on the
next night plus other beers to be notified in the next newsletter.

A couple of Hopsters expressed their disappointment that Beez Neez didn't
feature at our last tasting, despite indications to the contrary in one of
my previous newsletter. Well ... I decided we had enough good beer on show
and Beez Neez is on tap downstairs at the New Sydney anyway. Beez Neez ISN'T
one of my favourite beers, in fact I would describe it being "only vaguely
beer-like" and, as I enjoy absolute power in these matters, it was scratched
at the last minute. I trust that clears matters up.

Prost!

HOPS Newsletter #3
June 2004
Hail Hopsters,

Be warned and mildly alarmed - our next HOPS gathering will be held on
Thursday August 26 at the usual secret meeting place. (Hobart Organoleptic
PractitionerS is not a club as such, just a loose association of like-minded
souls in search of good beer.)

It was great to see such a bumper crop of Hopsters at our recent May
gathering and especially pleasing to see so many first-timers and so many
female Hopsters (Hopstresses?) in attendance. Spread the word and bring a
friend is the standing order if HOPS is to continue to flourish.

The keg of Kent Old Brown was duly dispatched in record time and it's some
years since I last tasted this Sydney beer (it's now brewed at Cascade). It
had shed some colour and substantial alcohol (down to 4.4% A/V) but proved
an admirable thirst-slaker for the restless troops.

Next up was Cascade 2004 First Harvest Ale brewed with early-picked,
unkilned Tassie hops and the first of the new season's malted barley. You
can't get a beer more Tasmanian than this characterful and full-flavoured
ale. Thanks to Cascade Brewery for supplying this fine and rare drop.

Dark Isle is our newest local boutique brewery (they're based in Glenorchy)
and their Leatherwood Honey Porter was a somewhat unusual introduction.
Brewer Gary Read explained the beer's pedigree and veteran Hopsters noted it
was drier than the Boag's Honey Porter encountered at the inaugural HOPS.

Our Mystery Beer game was a shambles, let's be honest. Mea culpa - next time
Herr Biermeister will have prepared more thoroughly (I promise). The beer
was San Miguel Pale Pilsener and Max and Tracey shared the mixed carton of
beer prize (but God knows who really won!). We rounded out proceedings with
James Squire Australian Strong Ale - a smoothly potent Winter warmer and a
suitably strong sedative.

We did try to get a couple of cartons of Carlsberg Crown, the beer specially
brewed in Copenhagen for Mary and Fred's nuptials but . we were let down by
our undercover local brewery connection (we won't name the brewery but it
starts with B). Meanwhile, I'm on the trail of some special brews for next
time, Wilhelm von Biermeister

HOPS Newsletter # 2
March 2004

Greetings fellow Hopsters,

Mark down Thursday May 27 in your diaries (details below) as our
not-to-be-missed, mid-winter HOPS gathering. (Hobart Organoleptic
Practitioners is not a club as such, but rather a loose association of
like-minded souls in search of good beer.)

Well, there was good beer aplenty but too few souls in evidence at our
recent March gathering. Legendary wine scribbler Phil Laing achieved
Platinum HOPS Status having been the only person (except for the Biermeister
and Guv'ner Gary, of course) to have attended all three events. Well done,
Phil, and I promise not to call you a Wine Wanker ever again (well . at
least, not until the next meeting).

As we gathered around the keg of Cooper's Sparkling Ale it was good to see
many new faces, even if the rest of you slackers were highly conspicuous by
your absence. James Squire Original Pilsener followed (it gets my vote as
best Australian lager going around) before enjoying a fine drop of Hazard's
Ale. Brewmaster Ken Holmes told us the beer's history as we enjoyed the
particularly fresh and fruity ale.

Next up was our Mystery Beer - a new innovation - and the winner of our
first Beer Options Game was newcomer Kevin Gleeson. Kev didn't actually
guess the beer's identity (Boag's Strongarm) but was the last man standing
after a series of beer-related questions from Wilhelm von Biermeister. Good
work, Kev, who won a carton of mixed beers from the night. Once again we
closed proceedings with Carlsberg Elephant beer while mopping up the last of
Mark's tasty, beer-friendly snacks. Yes, a few Hopsters were by now Brahms &
Liszt but no-one was exactly Elephant's Trunk.

I am currently pulling out all stops - even using subterfuge, blackmail and
coercion - to round up some fine and rare brews for the next meeting. Don't
miss it!

HOPS Newsletter  # 1

February 2004

Greetings fellow beer lovers and welcome to the very first newsletter of the Hobart Organoleptic PractitionerS. HOPS, for short. Not a club but rather a loose association of like-minded souls in search of good beer.

Our last meeting was on November 20 – sorry if you missed it. Numbers were a bit light-on but it was good to see several first-time Hopsters inducted. We toiled manfully (and womanfully) to despatch the last keg of Willie’s Extra Bitter in captivity but, in the end, fell short of the mark (some of use had to return to the New Sydney the following evening to finish the job).

Other beers on the night were the new Cooper’s Heritage, James Squire Colonial Wheat Beer, Carlsberg Elephant Beer and Leffe Veille Cuvee.  The latter pair weigh in at 7.1% and 8.2% alcohol/volume respectively and proved an effective sleeping draft for various insomniacs among our number.  A memorable bunch of beers soaked up with plenty of Mark’s tasty, beer-friendly tucker.

Two-time Hopster Doug Ezzy won the mixed carton of beers for the best suggestion to complete Hobart Organoleptic P---- S----. Doug’s entry was: Hobart Organoleptic ‘Preciation Society. Cute effort, Doug, but the Biermeister (who enjoys absolute power) has over-ruled and gone for Hobart Organoleptic PractitionerS. Further suggestions are welcome.

Hope to see you at the next HOPS meeting; bookings can be made at the New Sydney Hotel. RSVP by reply email. Spread the word.
